Kagiso Rabada is preparing to return to the location of his historic altercation with Steven Smith eight years earlier. Tristan Stubbs has been released, while Matthew Breetzke has been called up as the hosts want for someone to replicate what AB de Villiers did to Australia’s top four at St George’s Park in 2018.

Ryan Rickelton has also been announced as the wicketkeeper, implying that Kyle Verreynne would be left out. The choice to play two spinners in Durban flopped and will most likely not be replicated on a court with a reasonable grass cover and damp weather forecast throughout the week.

Australia, despite the volatility of their selection troubles leading up to Durban, appears calm in comparison. Cameron Green is not available, thus the middle-order squeeze will have to wait until at least the third test. By that time, they may have finished the series and moved one step closer to the World Test Championship (WTC) final.

The only question is how effectively their aging quicks will recover from a hard effort bowling on a flat pitch in Durban. There is no guaranty that any will miss, but the cumulative effect of bowling first in Gqeberha could be significant.

Kagiso Rabada returns from a hamstring injury, and South Africa is unlikely to deploy two spinners.

While it is now or never for the hosts in terms of the series, the match also has significant implications for the WTC table, despite the fact that much cricket remains to be played in the cycle. If South Africa loses in Gqeberha, it will drop to fifth place behind Bangladesh and India, while Australia will move closer to a third consecutive final.

South Africa are expected to make changes, with Breetzke likely to begin the batting while Marques Ackerman might make his debut at No.5. If they just played one, Senuran Muthusamy may outperform incumbents Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer. Bavuma said Anrich Nortje was ready to play again despite 40 overs in Durban, his first Test in three years, and that he could keep his spot.
