The Indian Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) recognises Harmanpreet Kaur’s work as captain of the Indian Women’s Cricket Team in all formats. Harmanpreet has given up her position as captain, ending an important part of her journey as a leader. In the past few decades, she has been a key figure in the growth of Indian women’s cricket, leading the team through some of its most important moments.

In 2012, Harmanpreet Kaur journey to become a leader began in a strange way. Because Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami were hurt and couldn’t play in the Women’s T20 Asia Cup final, Harmanpreet, who was still young, had to lead India. She jumped at the chance and led India to an 18-run win over Pakistan, which helped the team win the first Women’s T20 Asia Cup. That was her first time leading India, and it was the start of a more than ten-year journey as a leader.

Harmanpreet Kaur became India’s regular T20I captain in 2016.

After Mithali Raj retired from international cricket in 2022, he became captain for ODIs and Tests as well. While she was captain, Indian women’s cricket grew a lot. The team got more experienced and competitive across all forms, and there were more players on the team.

India made it to major finals, played the best teams in the world over and over again, and gained the confidence to take on the biggest challenges. Even though there were setbacks along the way, each season made the team stronger because they learned how to play under pressure and expect to fight for the biggest prizes in the game. One of the most important people in that progress was Harmanpreet Kaur.

Harmanpreet Kaur own performances often showed how ambitious he was. Before she became India’s all-format captain, she had one of the best individual performances in women’s cricket when she scored 171 runs against Australia in the 2017 Women’s Cricket World Cup semi-final. Harmanpreet Kaur played an incredibly powerful and authoritative knock that took the game away from Australia when India was in a tough spot.

This put India in the World Cup final. But that innings had an effect that went far beyond the score. The whole country was mesmerised by the performance, which proved that Indian women could put on world-class, match-winning shows on the biggest stages. It also inspired a new generation of young women cricketers to want to create moments like that for India.

As leader, she saw and played every type of international cricket. The 2020 Women’s T20 World Cup saw India make it to the final. The 2022 Commonwealth Games saw India win silver, and the 2023 Asian Games saw India win its first gold.

Harmanpreet Kaur was the first Indian women’s captain to win the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in 2025, when she led India to its historic first title. In the semi-final against Australia, she was very important. She scored 89 runs and shared a crucial 167-run partnership with Jemimah Rodrigues, which helped India chase down a record 339. Then, in the final in Navi Mumbai, India beat South Africa by 52 runs, making history.

The World Cup win was the most important thing Harmanpreet Kaur did as captain, and it was also one of the most important events in the history of Indian women’s cricket.

Another important event happened when she finished her last job as captain. Harmanpreet Kaur led India to its second straight Asian Games gold title by beating Sri Lanka by 147 runs in the final.

During her term, she also lived a very long time. She became the first player to play in 200 T20Is and the first leader in 150 T20Is this year. She also became the most-capped international player in women’s cricket.

The BCCI thanks Harmanpreet Kaur for the care she took while leading India, the faith she gave the team, and the work she did to improve Indian Cricket.
